Integrating Multi Layers of Reality

In creating a common shared reality among employees in an organization, it is important to remember that all of us view the world through our own frames of reference. When two or more people meet there a possibility for mismatch in their frames of reference and hence in understanding the reality in any of the given four levels.

  • Data
  • Meaning
  • Solvability
  • Personal competence

When individuals and group are able to account or include experience in all the above four realities it will help in creating a common shared reality.

Managerial Excellence

I have often asked many senior managers in organizations how to achieve managerial excellence. I get answers in many different versions and the underlying universal theme is, “without a team & team work managerial excellence can never be achieved.” In my perspective Managerial Excellence is a social competence of a team than a personal competence of a manager. Managerial excellence is not about “an excellent manager or a manager who excels “ but a social construct involving a team.

  • How does a manager and his/her team evolve and convert managerial excellence into a common shared focal point?
  • How to construct a team scuttle, which helps the team to travel together to achieve a managerial excellence?

Any reality is constructed in various layers. Bernd Schmid (Dr) observed that the reality is constructed at four levels.

  • Information
  • Meaning construction
  • Solution and Inter dependency
  • Competence and roles & responsibility

I believe there is a fifth level , which I call “emerging reality”. The levels of reality construction are:

  • Information
  • Meaning construction
  • Solution and Inter dependency
  • Emergent reality
  • Competence and roles & responsibility

Through consciously paying attention and constructing reality using these five levels, it is possible to transform a vision of excellence into reality and achieve managerial excellence. Let me explain each of the levels and its importance.
